A RM6.3 million infrastructure project to upgrade Penang's S18 Flood Retention Pond is set to safeguard more than 39,550 residents in George Town from flash flooding.
His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim has instructed the swift gazetting of Kuala Lumpur's green spaces and flood retention ponds, according to Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh, aiming to protect these areas from development.

The Federal Territories Department will accelerate the gazetting process for 30 per cent of remaining approved open spaces and flood retention ponds to safeguard these areas for residents, following an MACC investigation.

A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission probe found that Kuala Lumpur's flood retention ponds were never formally gazetted despite approval in 1998, allowing 32 hectares to be alienated for mixed developments worth RM214 million.
