The irony is so pronounced that it has begun to mirror historical parallels: just as cigarette executives once avoided their own products while marketing them aggressively, technology leaders today appear to view their creations with deep personal misgiving.

The California lawsuit against Meta, set to begin opening statements in Oakland on August 18, represents the latest major challenge to Facebook and Instagram's business practices. State attorneys general argue that the company methodically leveraged "powerful and unprecedented technologies to entice, engage and ultimately ensnare youth and teens." Meta has denied these allegations, yet the company's own leadership reveals a markedly different attitude toward screens when decisions concern their immediate families. Similarly, Google's Sundar Pichai noted that his son, at age eleven, remains without a smartphone, whilst the family's television is deliberately kept inaccessible. Apple's Tim Cook has stated unequivocally that he would prevent his nephew from accessing social networks.

This protective stance has generated a thriving market for alternative education serving technology workers. The Waldorf School of the Peninsula, located just two miles from Google's headquarters, charges up to US$47,500 annually specifically to deliver a low-technology curriculum. The school's website markets this approach directly: "No phones means no distraction, no social media anxiety, and no constant comparison. Just real childhood." Remarkably, several board members of this institution work simultaneously on artificial intelligence ventures, demonstrating their belief that deep digital restraint in childhood can coexist with technological sophistication in adulthood. The school frames its educational philosophy as preparing students to think clearly and develop "uniquely human capacities" that machines cannot replicate—a statement that carries considerable weight when delivered by those designing those very machines.

Snap's chief executive, Evan Spiegel, has attributed his professional success directly to his restricted childhood media environment. Growing up in the 1990s, Spiegel was prevented from watching television until shortly before adolescence, a constraint he now views as formative. He spent those unrestricted hours building projects and reading, habits he consciously reproduces with his own children. In a 2018 interview, Spiegel disclosed that his seven-year-old was permitted only ninety minutes of weekly screen time. More recently, he explained on a podcast that his two-year-old receives zero screen exposure, whilst his six and seven-year-olds watch films infrequently and possess no phones. Even his fifteen-year-old, the most digitally engaged in his household, represents a measured approach to technology adoption.

YouTube co-founder Steve Chen, who sold the video platform to Google in 2006, has articulated concern that contemporary digital culture trains children's attention spans into submission. The expectation that all information will arrive compressed into 280-character social media posts or fifteen-minute video clips represents, in his view, a cognitive distortion. Chen has made it a deliberate parenting goal to ensure his children develop the patience required for sustained reading and slow, methodical learning—skills he worries the modern environment actively erodes. The emergence of artificial intelligence has introduced new dimensions to these anxieties. Rather than serving as a passive intermediary between parent and child, AI threatens to substitute for human connection entirely. Zuckerberg has written enthusiastically about teaching his eight-year-old to code through AI assistance, and allowing the technology to suggest recipe modifications whilst they bake together. Yet this vision has not inspired universal embrace among his peers. YouTube's Chen, asking his teenage son for guidance on AI's role, received a pointed response: his son reads books and watches films and explicitly dislikes AI. OpenAI's Sam Altman, newly a father himself, has experienced a shift in perspective. Though he once promoted the idea of connecting family calendars to ChatGPT to generate personalised podcasts during school commutes, his stance has grown protective. Altman has acknowledged that his attitude toward algorithmic feeds and tablets in young children's hands has become "hugely" more resistant since becoming a parent.

Altman's evolving viewpoint reflects a broader recalibration among technology leaders regarding childhood development. He has reframed boredom, once viewed dismissively, as valuable for human development in ways he now recognises. Rather than populating every moment with algorithmic stimulation, he has begun to anticipate allowing his child unstructured outdoor play—what he calls "play in the dirt." This perspective, emerging from the architect of ChatGPT, suggests that even those closest to artificial intelligence development recognise certain developmental needs that technology cannot and perhaps should not fulfill.

The cumulative picture that emerges is troubling for those who have accepted the technology industry's narrative about digital tools as essential infrastructure for modern childhood. Those best positioned to understand how these systems operate, who possess the resources to choose any educational approach, have largely rejected intensive childhood screen exposure. The litigation now underway in California will examine whether Meta's design deliberately manipulates youth vulnerability. Yet the company's leadership has already implicitly answered: they believe children need protection from exactly what their technology delivers. Whether this contradiction constitutes a damning admission or merely reflects the preferences of wealthy individuals remains contested, but the pattern is undeniable. In Silicon Valley's most privileged households, the future elite are being raised with deliberate technological minimalism—a strategy their parents believe fosters the clearest thinking, the deepest reading, and the most resilient development.
