The 25-year-old from Melbourne was holidaying in Koh Samui with her family when the incident occurred on a curved section of Highway 4169 in tambon Bo Put. Stapleton was riding ahead of her relatives, each on separate motorcycles, when her bike lost grip on the slick pavement and crossed into oncoming traffic.
The collision took place at approximately 3.45pm in conditions that investigators have identified as a major contributing factor. Heavy rainfall had rendered the roadway treacherous, and CCTV recordings documented Stapleton's motorcycle sliding uncontrollably into the opposite lane. The bike struck a black Subaru driven by a 38-year-old Russian national and a grey Honda City operated by a 27-year-old Thai driver. Emergency responders from Koh Samui Hospital assessed Stapleton at the scene, determining she had suffered critical head injuries that proved fatal.
Pol Maj-General Suwat Suksri, head of Surat Thani Provincial Police, has directed Bo Phut investigators to conduct a meticulous examination of all available evidence. The inquiry will evaluate pavement characteristics, surveillance footage, accounts from witnesses and specialist analysis to establish precisely what caused the accident.
