A court in Valencia has handed down an eight-and-a-half-year prison sentence to Spanish striker Rafa Mir following his conviction on charges of sexual assault and assault causing injury. The judgment was delivered on Monday by the regional tribunal in eastern Spain, marking another significant case involving misconduct allegations in the nation's sporting sphere.
The case reflects intensifying scrutiny of personal conduct among Spanish athletes, particularly in football. Recent years have witnessed high-profile incidents that have brought questions of propriety to the forefront, including former Football Federation chief Luis Rubiales' non-consensual kiss of a national team player and the rape conviction—later overturned—of ex-Barcelona defender Dani Alves. Mir was detained in September 2024 after allegations emerged from a woman. His legal representatives contended at the time that any interaction had been consensual and that the striker wholly rejected the charges against him. The court's findings, however, determined that Mir and another football player had met two women at a Valencia nightclub before relocating to Mir's residence, where the assault subsequently took place in both the swimming pool and bathroom.
Judges emphasized the strength of the complainant's testimony, describing it as credible and unwavering, corroborated by corroborating statements and scientific examination. The victim has been awarded €64,000 in damages. The ruling is subject to appeal, the court confirmed.
Mir, aged 28, currently plays for LaLiga side Elche, though he was employed by six-time league champions Valencia when the 2024 incident occurred. His professional history encompasses spells at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sevilla, as well as representation of Spain's Olympic football team in Tokyo. Elche has not yet issued a statement in response to inquiries.
