Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil) (SJKT) Bandar Segamat is moving forward with plans to build its first proper sports field, after authorities issued an Initial Land Use Approval Letter for the project. The development represents a breakthrough for the institution, which has waited over four decades to utilise Lot 8740 for athletic facilities.
The approval came after Sekijang Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa raised the matter with Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. The root of the lengthy delay lay in conflicting land demarcation records held by multiple government agencies regarding the 1983 property dispute, which created legal confusion that stalled any construction work.
Dr Zaliha described the approval as a turning point for the school's sporting ambitions. The Tamil vernacular institution has earned renown for its hockey programme despite lacking dedicated facilities, meaning generations of students trained without proper infrastructure. "This resolves an issue that has dragged on for 43 years," she stated in remarks to the media.
Once remaining administrative matters are concluded, the school can begin formal planning and construction of playing fields and sports amenities. The move is expected to benefit both current pupils and the wider Segamat community, providing better opportunities for physical education and extracurricular activities. Dr Zaliha, who also chairs the Government Backbenchers Club, pledged to oversee the project through completion.
