The government is investing RM8 million to restore and modernise the Sungai Lembing tunnel in Kuantan, a move designed to reinvigorate tourism in the area and celebrate its significant place in Malaysia's tin-mining heritage. Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah announced the funding, which will be distributed via the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) to protect and develop this important historical attraction.

Work on the tunnel enhancement is scheduled to commence in 2025, with visitor protection serving as a key consideration during all phases of construction and beyond. The project forms part of a broader initiative to strengthen Sungai Lembing's standing as a travel destination while creating economic advantages for residents through increased visitor spending and commercial activity.

While awaiting the tunnel's reopening, authorities are promoting cultural and tourism activities to maintain interest in the location. A theatre production staged recently at the PCCL Theatre, which once housed one of the East Coast's earliest cinema venues, exemplifies these initiatives. Datuk Mohd Shahar, who represents Paya Besar in Parliament, highlighted that such efforts connect Sungai Lembing's past with contemporary audiences and younger visitors exploring the town's legacy.

The marketing strategy extends beyond the tunnel itself. Officials are publicising neighbouring attractions including the Orang Asli settlement at Sungai Mas, Panorama Hill, and Rainbow Waterfall to create a comprehensive experience for domestic and international travellers. Kuantan Mayor Datuk Zaliza Zulkipli attended the theatre event alongside Datuk Mohd Shahar.

Government backing for heritage-focused theatrical tourism initiatives signals a commitment to sustainable development in Sungai Lembing.
