The Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) will field candidates in four constituencies for the upcoming Johor state election, according to party vice-president Datuk T. Murugiah. The allocation was confirmed by MIC president Tan Sri SA. Vigneswaran following recent consultations with Barisan Nasional (BN) partners regarding electoral arrangements in Johor and Negeri Sembilan. The total number of seats MIC will contest in Negeri Sembilan remains under discussion, Murugiah added.

To strengthen its grassroots campaign, MIC plans to conduct a two-day workshop this weekend in Johor Bahru for approximately 150 party speakers. The training will equip them with campaign strategies and messaging aimed at mobilising support from the Indian community across all 56 state seats being contested by the BN coalition across Johor.

Based on internal party discussions, MIC is expected to contest Kemelah, Kahang and Bukit Batu, while surrendering Tenggaroh to UMNO in exchange for the Perling seat. The party may field roughly 50 per cent new candidates in this election cycle. In the 2022 Johor state polls, MIC successfully won three of four seats, retaining Kemelah, Kahang and Tenggaroh while losing Bukit Batu.

Elector voting in Johor is scheduled for July 11, with candidate nominations set for June 27. Negeri Sembilan will hold its state election on August 1, with nomination day on July 18. Party insiders suggest MIC may have an opportunity to contest two seats in Negeri Sembilan, though final arrangements have not been formalised.

Separately, MIC will organise sports competitions across 152 locations nationwide on Saturday as part of its 80th anniversary celebrations. The events, open to participants of all communities, include football, badminton, bowling, carrom and hiking activities.
