Malaysia's Youth and Sports Ministry has committed to a comprehensive approach to ensuring that technological advancement benefits all young Malaysians regardless of socioeconomic background. Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari announced that the ministry intends to dramatically widen access to artificial intelligence training through the existing youth development infrastructure, working alongside government agencies, universities, private industry partners and community organisations to create a coherent national strategy.

The announcement comes in response to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's declaration in the 2026 National Day Address regarding efforts to democratise access to AI technology across the youth population. Recognising that artificial intelligence will fundamentally reshape employment markets and economic opportunities in the coming years, the government has positioned AI literacy as a critical national priority rather than a luxury available only to privileged segments of society.

Central to this initiative is the AI for the People programme, which establishes a pathway for Malaysians between 18 and 30 years old to acquire foundational and intermediate skills in artificial intelligence applications. The programme has set an ambitious initial target of reaching 100,000 participants, reflecting the scale of the government's ambition to prevent the emergence of a divided generation where some youth possess cutting-edge technological competencies while others fall further behind in the digital economy.

The mechanism for delivery leverages the Rakyat Digital platform, which serves as the learning interface through which participants access structured AI educational modules. Those who complete these courses beginning from September 1 will receive complimentary three-month subscriptions to premium artificial intelligence applications, removing a significant financial barrier that typically restricts access to these tools among middle and lower-income households. This practical benefit ensures that participants can translate theoretical learning into hands-on experience with the actual tools shaping the modern workplace.

Dr Mohammed Taufiq framed this initiative not merely as skills training but as a strategic economic investment in human capital development. He emphasised that Malaysia cannot afford to have cohorts of young people unable to participate meaningfully in an AI-driven economy. The digital divide, he suggested, represents a threat to social cohesion and economic dynamism if allowed to widen unchecked.
