Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan has assured that the nationwide construction of additional modular classrooms under the Programme Cakna MADANI initiative will be fully completed by December this year, ensuring these new facilities are operational when schools welcome their Year One intake in 2027. Speaking during a working visit to the Public Works Department (JKR) Alor Gajah District Engineer's Office, Ahmad emphasised that the adoption of the Modular Precast System (MPS) has enabled the ministry to maintain strict adherence to project schedules while accelerating delivery timelines.
The modular construction approach represents a strategic pivot in how Malaysia approaches school infrastructure development. Ahmad stressed that the system delivers lower overall costs while maintaining construction quality standards, with the added advantage that these buildings possess durability measured in decades rather than years. The deputy minister hinted that while current implementation focuses on additional classroom blocks, the modular system possesses sufficient versatility to be extended to permanent building structures in future phases.
Within Alor Gajah district alone, the scope of development is substantial. The JKR is constructing additional classrooms specifically designed for the 2027 Year One cohort across 14 schools under Programme Cakna MADANI, with total investment reaching RM12.05 million. Beyond classroom construction, the same programme includes the development of two covered multipurpose halls and covered multipurpose courts at separate schools, representing an additional RM1.83 million in infrastructure spending. These multipurpose facilities address a practical gap in many Malaysian schools, providing flexible spaces for physical education, assembly programmes, and community events regardless of weather conditions.
The broader infrastructure development agenda in the Alor Gajah area extends significantly beyond the modular classroom initiative. The JKR is simultaneously executing five major Federal building projects valued at RM22.6 million, which collectively address critical infrastructure needs across the district. These include reconstruction of dilapidated buildings at two schools—Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Tengah and Sekolah Kebangsaan Kuala Linggi—projects that reflect the ministry's commitment to ensuring equitable learning environments across both urban and rural areas. The replacement canteen facility at Sekolah Ramuan Cina Besar addresses food service infrastructure, while the construction of the Lesung Batu Mosque serves the broader spiritual and community needs of the district.
Infrastructure development in Alor Gajah also encompasses skills training facilities, with RM22.6 million allocated for upgrading the Hospitality Department training facilities at the Alor Gajah National Youth Skills Institute (IKTBN). This investment recognises the critical role that vocational education plays in preparing young Malaysians for employment in the tourism and hospitality sectors, industries of significant economic importance to the region. Maintenance and preservation of existing Federal infrastructure receives dedicated funding attention as well. An additional RM5.1 million has been allocated specifically for maintaining Federal buildings utilised by various government agencies operating in the Alor Gajah district. These agencies span the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, and the Ministry of Health, reflecting the cross-ministerial coordination required to maintain functional public infrastructure networks. Preventive maintenance programmes of this nature prove far more cost-effective than emergency repairs when buildings deteriorate to critical conditions, a lesson Malaysia has learned through years of deferred maintenance backlogs.
