Indonesian men's singles shuttler Alwi Farhan has answered his detractors with a commanding display at the Australian Open, clinching his second Super 500 crown on June 14 in Sydney. The world No. 13 defeated China's Dong Tianyao with a dominant 21-13, 21-13 victory at the Quaycentre, adding to his trophy cabinet following a triumph at the Indonesian Masters earlier this year in January.
The 21-year-old's success comes as a welcome reprieve following months of scrutiny stemming from Indonesia's shock group-stage exit at the Thomas Cup Finals in Horsens, Denmark last May. The team suffered a 4-1 reversal against France, with Alwi personally going down to Alex Lanier in his encounter during that tournament.
Reflecting on his turnaround, Alwi expressed gratitude for the backing he received throughout a challenging period. "I feel incredibly happy to win because the past few months have been incredibly difficult for me since the Thomas Cup," he told the All-Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI). He acknowledged both supporters and critics, vowing to persist through adversity and remain committed to raising his performance standards.
Alwi's breakthrough in Sydney partially offset wider setbacks for the Indonesian contingent at the tournament. The nation's men's doubles pairing of Sabar Gutama-Moh Reza Pahlevi, seeded third, fell to fourth-seeded Chen Boyang-Liu Yi with a 21-15, 21-19 defeat. Similarly, women's doubles representatives Febriana Dwipuji-Meilysa Trias succumbed to China's Jia Yifan-Zhang Shuxian in straight sets, 24-22, 21-13.
