FIFA has barred Senegal's national football team from wearing a commemorative star on their jersey honouring the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations victory when they compete at the 2026 World Cup, according to African football journalist Micky Jnr.
Under current FIFA regulations, continental championship stars are permitted solely during friendly encounters and qualification matches. In major tournaments sanctioned by FIFA, stars can only appear on kits to commemorate World Cup triumphs. Senegal players have previously displayed one star above their team logo in celebration of their continental championship success.
The restriction extends beyond Senegal. FIFA also prohibited Egypt from featuring stars on their uniform despite the nation's record of seven Africa Cup of Nations titles, a decision revealed on Saturday.
Senegal will compete in Group I at the 2026 World Cup alongside France, Norway and Iraq. The tournament will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada and runs from June 11 to July 19.
