The demand for identity verification solutions has created a thriving market segment. Clear, a company best known for expedited airport security lanes, expanded its digital identity division last year to serve both large corporations and smaller employers screening applicants. After customers began using the platform to vet remote workers already on payroll, Clear incorporated biometric facial recognition technology into its recruitment screening products. Similarly, Persona, another identity verification specialist, reports that candidate screening is now among its fastest-growing service lines.

Persona's platform exemplifies the technical sophistication of modern hiring fraud detection. The system identifies newly created email addresses, flags computers with clocks set to different time zones than the candidate's purported location, detects virtual private network usage designed to mask geographic location, and alerts when IP addresses move geographically faster than physical travel would allow. In one recent case, a Persona client discovered an applicant impersonating a Coinbase employee using biographical details lifted directly from the employee's verified LinkedIn profile.

These screening mechanisms differ fundamentally from traditional background checks, which verify historical information about candidates. Instead, companies now monitor the devices, metadata, and behavioral signals applicants generate during the application process itself. At a conference for human resources professionals hosted by the Society for Human Resource Management, recruiters discussed what Stephen Dwyer, president of the American Staffing Association, candidly described as "stalking" candidates with biometric tools and tracking their internet protocol addresses—activities that would have seemed invasive mere years ago. One verification tactic has become almost absurdly specific: requesting that interviewees direct their webcam toward nearby electrical outlets to confirm their physical location within the United States.

North American talent acquisition is not the only sector experiencing this phenomenon.
