Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has called on all parties, particularly government employees, to avoid using inappropriate or disrespectful language in their public statements. Speaking in Putrajaya on June 15, Teo emphasised that such caution should extend beyond election periods to encompass all official communications.
Teo stressed that remarks touching on matters of race, religion, and royalty (3R) should be carefully avoided by those in government service. She made her position clear while addressing journalists following her opening remarks at an industry dialogue on journalism standards held at the venue.
Her statement comes in response to controversy surrounding Mohd Hisyamuddin Ghazali, director-general of the Department of Community Communications (J-KOM), who has faced criticism for allegedly employing inappropriate language since taking office on June 9. Teo indicated she had not yet had the opportunity to discuss the matter directly with Mohd Hisyamuddin, who succeeded Datuk Ismail Yusop in the role.
Teo's remarks underscore expectations for professional conduct among public sector leaders. By highlighting the importance of measured communication, she has effectively signalled government concerns about the tone and substance of official statements from its agencies and departments.
