Two military personnel were killed in a grenade-throwing training accident at the Hobart Camp shooting range in Gurun, Kedah, on June 16. The Malaysian Army has now confirmed their identities as Corporal Norazmi Abu Bakar of the 6th Battalion, Royal Malay Regiment (6 RAMD), and Private Siti Khadijah Sungip of the 1st Squadron, Royal Army Engineers Regiment (1 RAJD).
The explosion occurred at 10.57 am while the two were participating in Combat Enhancement Training exercises run by the 2nd Infantry Division. Both personnel sustained critical injuries in the blast and were pronounced dead while being transported to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH) in Sungai Petani.
The remains have been transferred to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for post-mortem examination. The deceased's families have received condolences from Army Chief General Tan Sri Azhan Md Othman, who pledged to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident thoroughly.
General Azhan has also ordered a comprehensive review to understand what caused the training accident. The Army statement emphasised that findings from the investigation will inform improvements to safety protocols and training procedures across all military exercises. The service expressed commitment to strengthening safety measures to prevent future tragedies.
