Johor Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan has ruled out standing as a candidate in the forthcoming Johor state election, putting to rest weeks of speculation about his electoral plans.
The Deputy Works Minister made the announcement following a visit to the Johor Public Works Department in Iskandar Puteri. He dismissed reports that he would contest either the Benut or Pulai Sebatang state seats, both under the Pontian parliamentary constituency.
"I have already conveyed my intentions to the party leadership, and I believe it is only right that other candidates should have the chance to compete for these positions," Ahmad told assembled media personnel.
As the Member of Parliament for Pontian, Ahmad pledged to remain engaged in grassroots campaigning to bolster BN and UMNO's performance during the state polls. He will channel his efforts into supporting the party machinery across the state.
The Election Commission has announced that voting for the 16th Johor state election will take place on July 11. Candidates will submit their nominations on June 27, with early voting scheduled for July 7.
