KUALA TERENGGANU, March 28 — An express bus driver was detained after testing positive for methamphetamine during an Aidilfitri enforcement operation at the Kuala Terengganu City Council (MBKT) Bus Terminal, yesterday.
Terengganu Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Zamri Samion said the 30-year-old driver was detained by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), after failing a urine test at about 9.45am.
Initial investigations revealed that the driver, a Kuala Terengganu native, was scheduled to operate an express bus bound for Pasir Gudang, Johor.
“We have instructed the company to take immediate action by replacing the main bus driver with a substitute, to ensure that passengers reach their destination safely.
“JPJ takes drug use among express bus drivers very seriously, as it poses a significant risk to passenger safety. We will conduct thorough inspections and checks on drivers and companies, to prevent such incidents,” he said at the special operation in conjunction with the Aidilfitri celebrations, dubbed “Op HRA”, last night.
Meanwhile, Zamri said a total of 940 summonses had been issued since the launch of Op HRA on March 24.
He said these summonses resulted from inspections conducted on 5,544 vehicles, including motorcycles, cars, and lorries.
“During the operation, state JPJ also issued 603 other notices and impounded eight vehicles,” he added.
He added that 20 accident-prone areas had been identified across Terengganu. These include two locations in Kuala Terengganu, four in Marang, three in Dungun, two in Kemaman, four in Hulu Terengganu, three in Setiu, and two in Besut. — Bernama
